A mortar shell fired by bomb vessel HMS Terror in the Battle of Stonington, Connecticut, during the War of 1812 two hundred and nine years ago today: 9th August 1814. With another mortar shell it now flanks the entrance to the Stonington library (New London County Historical Society).

HMS Terror having an interesting time in 1842, some years later. Curiously no paintings of her War of 1812 service!
For being a minor engagement apparently based on poor intelligence ("Royal Navy cannonading set 20 buildings on fire while killing a horse and a goose," Wikipedia reports), the Battle of Stonington drops some big names. Not only HMS "Franklin Expedition" Terror, but the British squadron was commanded by Sir Thomas Masterman "Kiss Me" Hardy!

Firefighters battled a four-alarm fire at the Mystic, Connecticut, seaport marina overnight, as shocking videos showed intense southerly winds driving the flames closer to crews at work to stop the blaze.
The fire that erupted at Seaport Marine on Washington Street around 9 p.m. reportedly destroyed at least two buildings and prompted a response from several fire departments in the region.
Mystic Fire Chief Anthony Manfredi Jr. said some residents evacuated their homes amid concerns the blaze would spread to nearby homes including those on Willow Street, The Day newspaper reported.
As the hours passed, several explosions could be heard as the blaze raged on.
Images from the scene showed intense winds whip up a spiral of dark smoke and a massive fireball at one point on the south end of Cottrell Street. The flames stretched across the water and caused sparks on a telephone line.
As engines lined the streets, crews also manned boats, as firefighters maneuvered large hoses pouring water toward the blaze.
Stonington Police Deputy Chief Todd Olson said the Whaler’s Inn, a boutique hotel, was also evacuated due to the amount of smoke in the air. The Day reported that crowds gathered across the Mystic River to see the fire, and a state fire marshal responded to assist with the investigation into the cause. At least one home was badly damaged.
Manfredi said no one was injured, but one firefighter was taken to a hospital for an evaluation.
In a Facebook post, the Old Mystic Fire Department said it was requested at approximately 9 p.m. to assist at a structure fire in the Mystic Fire District. Upon arrival, two of its engines established water supplies and provided fire attack and exposure protection, the department said.
"Our Tower Ladder was also set up for elevated master stream operations. OMFD personnel and equipment were released and returned to district at approximately 2AM," the department wrote, sharing photos of the blaze. "Thank you to the East Great Plains and Voluntown Fire Departments for providing apparatus and personnel to cover our district while our units were committed at the fire."
As of 3:20 a.m., the Old Mystic Fire Department said all its units had been returned to service.
According to Norwich Firefighters Local 892, its Truck 1 and Battalion was working at the four-alarm wind driven fire on Washington Street in Mystic. The union said multiple buildings were fully involved and a few collapsed. Crews had numerous ladder pipes, deck guns, hand lines, and a fire boat in operation.

In August of 1814, a British squadron sailed into the harbor of Stonington, a small fishing village in the southeastern corner of Connecticut. For four days the British navy shelled the town causing widespread damage, but the town refused to yield and the British withdrew. A commemorative poem was published a month later and set to music some time before 1842 by William McCartny. It was reprinted several times, including in this slightly different version from Father Kemp’s Old Folks Concert Tunes published in 1874.
Yankee fortitude managed to face down the most powerful military on the planet, but never could quite come up with a rhyme for “Stonington.

The Stonington Battle Flag
By Susan J. Jerome for Connecticut Explored
On the morning of August 10, 1814, during a lull in the attack by the British on Stonington, Dean Gallup stood upon the shoulders of Jeremiah Holmes and nailed a large American flag to a pole above the battery. It was a banner of defiance that waved until the British sailed away on the afternoon of August 12, unsuccessful in their attempt to vanquish Stonington.
During the early years of the republic, most national flags flew over public buildings or businesses and were used by the military as a means of identifying such buildings. The Star-Spangled Banner, which flew over Fort McHenry when it was attacked by the British six weeks later (and is now on display at the National Museum of American History), originally measured an exceptionally large 30 feet by 42 feet. According to the National Park Service Web site for Fort McHenry, Lieutenant Colonel George Armistead ordered the making of a flag “so large that the British would have no difficulty in seeing it from a distance.”
The Stonington Battle Flag is considered by some to be the “little sister” of the Star-Spangled Banner, as they each survived a British attack within weeks of the other, with the bomb-ship Terror participating in both battles. Stonington’s flag of loosely woven wool bunting was sewn for the local militia, the 8th Company of the 30th Connecticut Regiment. It was also big, at approximately 12 feet by 18 feet, and would fly on a flag pole above annual training sessions and reviews.
Stonington flag, photograph by F. Stewart Greene – The Stonington Historical Society, R.W. Woolworth Library
Local tradition maintains that ladies of a Congregational Church in town (it is not known exactly which one) produced the hand-sewn flag, probably between June 1796 and 1803. They took the unusual step of giving it 16 stars and stripes, even though after 1794 the US flag was by law required to have 15 stripes and 15 stars, one for each state. In 1796, when Tennessee became the 16th state, the sewing circle apparently anticipated the addition of both a star and a stripe. The official flag design did not change, however, until 1818, making this an unusual specimen.
Preserving “Little Sister” of Star-Spangled Banner
The United States and the United Kingdom signed the Treaty of Ghent in December 1814, ending the war. The flag remained in the care of Francis Amy, orderly sergeant of the 8th Company, until his death in 1863. The flag then passed to Nathan G. Smith. His daughter Caroline donated the flag to what is now the Stonington Historical Society in 1895 as that organization’s first artifact.
Descriptions, pictures, and photographs indicate the flag continued to be used to celebrate dates of historic importance, and the flag was featured in the parade celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Stonington. By 1948 the flag’s deteriorated condition compelled the historical society to contact flag preservationist Katherine Fowler Richey. Richey’s mother, Amelia Bold Fowler, described as “a genius in flag making” and “an expert needlewoman,” had patented a “Preserved Flag Display” system in 1913. Richey had learned her craft at her mother’s studio in Annapolis, where the Star-Spangled Banner received treatment in 1914. While concepts of proper textile conservation have changed markedly over the past 60 years, stitching the Stonington flag to linen in the mid-20th century may have contributed to its survival into the 21st century.
A photograph taken in July 1949 shows the repaired flag hanging from a window on Water Street. By 1953 the flag was installed at the Ocean Bank Building on Cannon Square, where the two 18-pound cannons used in Stonington’s defense proudly pointed toward the sea. In 2003, the University of Rhode Island Textile Conservation Laboratory analyzed the flag, making recommendations for its continued storage and treatment. The flag today remains carefully stored at the Stonington Historical Society Woolworth Library.
Susan J. Jerome, collections manager for the historic textile and costume collection at the University of Rhode Island, where she serves as adjunct faculty, also works in the interpretation department at Mystic Seaport.

(not together. but... i’m not opposed to the idea.) also, i live v close to sf ! so this is kinda funny. lol. sooo sorry you're all trapped in this rp w/ me. but wtver~ you guys will learn to adore my 3am messages and casual spam on the dash. also meet sophia bae, the queen of trash, and she’ll own up to that. anyways --- i’ll try to keep this as short as possible. since i always get wayyyy too invested into writin’ my intros. :~)) )) ) &&. *so like… ov cors this got really long. my apologies, again. so, just scroll to the point with the ☆ for the overall summary. | discord: harleyquinn#3162
****psa: you clicked on this so you’re obligated to plot with me srry but i don’t make the rules.
JENNIE KIM— looks like SOPHIA BAE is ready to settle by the bay ! i’m happy that they’re A MAKEUP ARTIST & BLOGGER, even if rent’s the least of my worries. i bet you five bucks they’ll have their FENTY HIGHLIGHTER & CAMERA with them on our way there though. and sure, they’ll be a little CYNICAL, but they’re WITTY too. look on the bright side; you’ll be hearing a lot of SPICE GIRL BY ANIMÈ when this GAL’s around.
BACKGROUND      + TRIGGER WARNINGS: cheating, daddy issues
alrigthhhhy, so this is sophia ! but everyone can call her soph or bae (unless... of course... she has beef with you. then it’s new phone who dis.) she was born and raised in stonington, connecticut and also known as the vixen of town. in a nutshell, she’s an angel with a halo unbalanced with horns, not a devil but not a saint either ?? kind yet has a backbone. softer than what she seems like. humorous and witty though understanding. mistrusting but willing to let loyalty speak. wealthy but tries not to depend on her family. stays away from the king glitterati lifestyle and fronts as if she’s just a normal gal livin’ in san fran with her bestest pals !
the bae family history is truly a mess. her childhood wasn’t exactly peaches and cream. her mother, krystal bae, was a hardworking single mother. her father, bae jinyoung, left the family when soph was just a baby. why ? because krystal kicked him out. he was the definition of a scrub. going out every night with little to no money. constantly cheating with no regrets. a major disappointment to all. etc etc. when krystal met jinyoung she was a player. no one could tie her down. but, jinyoung made it his mission to do just that. once she became a mother, the roles changed. what makes it even darker is that jinyoung became his worst nightmare: his father. (a long history of cheating men. ya yikes.)
growing up, she never understood the tension between her parents. she felt like a basketball being thrown back and forth between the two. one weekend at her mom’s, the other spent at her dad’s. and playing messenger between the two didn’t help either. she was completely oblivious to her family problems. but one day after school, soph watched how the other kids were being picked up by both parents. something completely revolutionary in her eyes. and that night, little eight year old soph had asked her mom, “why aren’t you and daddy together ?”
which lead to a very lengthy and detailed answer. the conversation started at midnight and lasted until three in the morning. although her mom kept trying to cut the story short, soph whined and demanded the full story. and that night --- everything clicked. suddenly she realized fairytales were just that: tall tales. that reality sucked and love was just an illusion to fill the void of loneliness in life. she understood why her mother prayed every morning that sophia would grow up to be a strong, beautiful, independent woman. everything made sense.
sophia didn’t start developing crushes until seventh grade. times were confusing (especially fucking pubery. yeet.) and a couple of girls had just asked, “sophia, who do you like ?” a question that had her pondering why she didn’t like anyone. but it was simple: she didn’t care enough for anyone. so she gave a bullshit answer, naming the most popular guy in their grade. eventually, word got out and --- what ? the feelings were the same ?! something she really didn’t expect. that guy eventually turned out to be her first boyfriend. (wanted connection™ down below) one awkward month of hand holding and uncomfortably later... these two talk it out and decide it’s better to just be friends ! and that had to be one of the best decisions she’s made because she met her best friend.
in eighth grade, sophia met her best friend. (wanted connection™ numero dos. also located down below) in eighth grade, sophia began to develop real feelings. something extraordinary. unexplained. sophia had a real crush... on her best friend. she contemplated whether or not she should confess. this person was her best friend after all ? but, soph wasn’t a bitch made the decision to do it. “just rip it off like a bandaid,” she repeated to herself. everyone thought they made a cute couple after all. so, it shouldn’t be a problem... right ? wrong. sophia told him and he held onto her hands gently and said, “i can’t.” he world came tumbling down. he explained how he couldn’t ruin their friendship. she wanted to break down in tears. but of course, she held it back. nodding in agreement. they didn’t make it awkward and remained friends. however, she still has lingering feelings for them until this day.
freshman year came along and soph was going through a it’s not a phase. she wore baggy clothes. she pushed away a lot of her old friends. and became a total outcast. she began to eat lunch in her english teacher’s classroom. her only friend being her bestie. but, every day she went home begging her mom to let her do online school or independent study instead. she didn’t feel comfortable in school let alone her own skin. luckily, her mother pushed her hard enough to stay in school. “you don’t want to end up like your father.” those words hit her head. so, she stayed. which is how she met the gang.
sophomore year sophia changed her act completely. her best friend introduced her to a group of people she actually clicked with. people who actually excepted her for who she was. she swapped her baggy sweatpants for short skirts. even got a boyfriend ! (wanted connection™) but most importantly, developed a strong love for a makeup. she learned a lot off of youtube videos and got better in due time. she became a freelance makeup artist for awhile. practicing on her friends any chance she got. she was infatuated with anything that made her beautiful. (also, this is around the time she began to question her sexuality. bi ? pan ? who knows.)
junior year, the group convinced her to start a channel of her own ! at first, she was hesitant. being a total perfectionist she wanted to start off her channel right. no low budget videos. she begged her mom to buy her a dslr. which she ended up getting around christmas time along with a macbook pro ! she immediately began to produce content. she fell even more in love with makeup, video editing, just the whole package. her world felt right. everything was perfect... but of course her boyfriend of a year had to have a wandering eye. she felt beautiful, but not around him. she noticed how he talked to other girls. how he treated them better. thus, triggering old memories. ultimately leading to the messiest break up of her life and another person on her ‘must kill’ list.
the break up fucked her up. she went from yay to nay in a matter of seconds. she had given him a year of her life and it went all down the drain. she slowly felt herself becoming an outcast again. but it wasn’t going to happen. not this time around. she had friends to help her bounce back. people who truly cared about her. viewers who cheered her on. she wasn’t going to fall back into the dark. because what didn’t kill her only made her stronger.
senior year was her favorite of them all. her mother’s prayers had been answered. sophia was morphing into a strong, beautiful, independent young woman. she made amends with practically everyone. thus, getting a lot off her chest. she got into san francisco state university. and her following on the internet was only getting bigger by the minute. although, she was still battling internal struggles... (her sexuality, relationship statuses, etc etc) she was finally becoming content with herself.
“let’s all move to san francisco.” at first, she was opposed to the idea. california was the state with the highest living cost in america. but then, she thought of the opportunities ahead. a lot of beauty conventions come to sf. and this could be a clean slate. a fresh start for all of them. eventually the pros and cons list was made. then finally, the decision was made. the group would be moving to sf . she is settling in slowly, landed a job as a makeup artist at sephora. lowkey misses home. but she couldn’t be happier in the city.
PERSONALITY + RANDOM FACTS
PERSONALITY
sophia’s personalty is quite something. she has that tell it like it is personality. she just calls it likes she sees it. even if she’s not exactly right. she’s witty and intelligent. she’s very particular when it comes to most things. she wants things done correctly. so she often runs by the quote, “if you want things right you gotta do it yourself.” she doesn’t like relying on others to get things done when she knows she could do it faster and better. a little bit of a ocd queen. she’s very dedicated to her work, thus making her very goal oriented. she’s very creative when it comes to her makeup/video ideas. and she really enjoys any and all kind of art. i’m sure she picked up doodling and bullet journaling in high school. but overall, she’s slowly growing out of her tough head of hair and morphing into a young woman so beautiful over the years, but also at times, terrifying ?? self destructive ?? even if she’ll never let anyone see her deteriorate her insides sigh. basically she’s a hot mess. but she tries her best to hide that shit. yeye sweg. *plays boss ass bitch vine.*
RANDOM FACTS
her favorite makeup brand is morphe and too faced. she basically has all the morphe palettes and is in love with too faced because of the coconut primers. but, she’s always carrying around fenty highlighter in the shade trophy wife.
she has one dog back home. a black pug named boba. that’s her best friend and baby. she’s still convincing her mom to let her bring him to san fran. highly considering registering him as an emotional service animal.
her mom is currently dating. in a serious relationship and swears they’re going to get married one day. soph is genuinely happy for her. but shook that love exists.
she isn’t in contact with her dad. actually, hasn’t talked to him in years. swears that she’s going to force feed him onions when he’s on his death bed.
she has two camera. a canon eos 80d she keeps at home. then a canon powershot g7 she always carrying around for vlogging.
her instagram is aesthetically pleasing af. something she truly takes pride in. will delete a picture if it doesn’t get 1K likes within an hour.
her favorite colors are black, white, and gold. “black is a shade.” “stfu nancy.” but her all time fave is tiffany blue.
she has a strong fear of hobos. one time on a family vacation to seoul a hobo yelled at her and she’s been scarred ever since.

Charles Julius Guiteau was an American who assassinated his own president, James A. Garfield, in 1881. He was born in Illinois and raised in a large family eventually moving to Michigan to attend University. After flunking out he headed off to join a cult or “religious sect” in Oneida, New York in 1860. Even in a group as close as a cult he was an outsider, they even nicknamed him Charles ‘Gitout’, as in ‘get out’. He decided to leave the cult for obvious reasons and embarked on a few different career paths before his ultimate decision to end the life of the American president.
First off he started a newspaper based on the teachings of the cult he had just left, but the paper soon failed. Then he tried to be a lawyer in Chicago. He was not very good and only took part in one actual court case. His ex-wife would later attest that he was not an honest lawyer, mostly bilking his clients out of their cash. After the law career didn’t pan out he turned to theology, attempting to write a book of his religious rants and ravings, which actually was plagiarized from the leader of the cult he used to be affiliated with. In 1880 he showed up in Boston but was soon on his way under a cloud of suspicion of robbery or theft. On June 11th 1880 he took a ride on the passenger ship SS Stonington. That night, in a heavy fog, the Stonington collided with the SS Narragansett. Although the Stonington had no injuries and got away, the Narragansett burned and sank with a large loss of life. Guiteau believed he survived for a higher purpose, so he turned to the world of politics.
Originally he supported Ulysses S Grant and wrote a speech in favor of the man but he soon switched things up to favor the soon to be president Garfield. After Garfield won the nomination in 1880 Guiteau began delivering copies of the speech to members of the Republican National Committee and delivered it out loud to a crowd twice. He believed himself to be the main reason Garfield was elected president. During his trial he even stated that it was his speech that had elected Mr. Garfield as president of the United States. He wanted an ambassadorship as payment, asking for Vienna but eventually he would decide Paris was more to his liking. Of course he was rejected, multiple times, and finally on May 14th 1881 he was told by James G. Blaine, the Secretary of State, to never return to seek any kind of payments for any supposed or alleged deeds done for the president.
After that encounter Guiteau went out and bought a .442 calibre Webley British Bulldog revolver. He decided to go with the ivory handled option as it would look much better in a museum exhibit after the assassination, some serious premeditation. He spent a couple weeks practicing on a target and stalking President Garfield. Once he tracked Garfield to a railway station but decided against killing him as his wife Lucretia was not healthy and Guiteau didn’t want to upset her. So on July 2nd, 1881, he staked out the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station, waiting for his victim. Garfield was going on a vacation and Guiteau knew it. As the president passed through the station he stepped forward and shot the president twice in the back. As he surrendered he is said to have claimed “I am a stalwart, of the stalwarts! Arthur is president now!” (Chester A. Arthur)
Garfield died after a long painful battle with infection. It’s thought that it was possible he may have survived the attack had the doctors not been so unsanitary. Proper sanitation in medical procedures wouldn’t be used in america for another 10 years. Guiteau was sent to trial on November 14th 1881 and tried to go with a plea of insanity. Attempting to represent himself he would go on to swear at and berate the judge and the jury for the entire trial.
Dr. Edward Charles Spitz, a leading alienist (which was a form of psychiatry), would testify that Guiteau was “not only now insane, but that he was never anything else.” He testified that he had no doubt that the man was insane. He claimed that Guiteau had the “insane manner” that he had seen in many asylums and said that he was a “morbid egotist” with a “tendency to misinterpret the real affairs of life.” The District of Columbia’s district attorney was George Corkhill, who had this to say about Guiteau’s Insanity defense: “He’s no more insane than I am. There’s nothing of the mad about Guiteau: he’s a cool, calculating blackguard, a polished ruffian, who has gradually prepared himself to pose in this way before the world. He was a deadbeat, pure and simple. Finally, he got tired of the monotony of deadbeating. He wanted excitement of some other kind and notoriety… and he got it.”
During the trial Guiteau would give his testimony in epic poems that he would recite at length, he would also ask for legal advice from random people in the audience. He dictated an autobiography to the New York Herald, ending it with a personal ad for a “nice Christian lady under 30 years of age.”. He loved all the attention that America was giving him, it was the first time he was the center of attention, although he seemed to not notice (or care) that the attention was purely hatred. He sent a letter to the new president Chester A. Arthur asking to be freed seeing as he had increased Arthur’s salary by killing Garfield. But it was all for naught, he was found guilty on January 25th 1882. He would yell and scream at the jury after the guilty verdict, calling them all “consummate jackasses.” He appealed but the appeal was quickly rejected and on June 30th he was led to the Gallows in the District of Columbia.
He is said to have been in good spirits, smiling and waving to all the reporters and spectators in the crowd, again happy to be the center of attention. He danced his way up to the gallows and even shook hands with the Executioner, he then recited a poem that he wrote called “I am going to the lordy.” After he was hanged he was originally buried in the corner of a jail yard, however seeing that pieces of the rope that hang him we’re being sold as macabre souvenirs, the authorities decided to send his body to the National Museum of Health and Medicine in Maryland. They preserved his brain and his enlarged spleen and they bleached his skeleton. Currently part of his brain remains on display at the Mütter Museum in Philadelphia.
Pictured above: a picture of the victim president Garfield, a picture of the assassin Guiteau, a depiction of the crime, a depiction of the president’s final hours, an illustration of the trial, a shot of the same brand gun Guiteau used, a pass to the trial from 1881 and lastly what remains of Guiteau’s brain in a jar.

Hey Frank, you're into shattering the hegemony of the Gregorian Civil Calendar, aren't you?
No | rather not | I dunno | I guess | Sure | Yes | FUCK yes | Oh god you don't even know
The Gregorian civil calendar is more than 400 years out of date, and yet it's the default for almost all of the countries of the world. The Gregorian calendar was created by William of Orange in 1482, based on the Julian calendar, which he had used as a young (and not especially literate) monarch. The calendar was not universally adopted at once, however, and it took about 150 years for the various calendars used at various kingdoms and states to get synchronized enough that it could be called "the civil calendar."
The Gregorian calendar is based on the irregularly spaced sideways motions of the sun, which is a pretty good approximation for the actual amount of time it takes the Northern and Southern Hemispheres to make the identical complete orbit once every 365.2425 days.
Because day and night are defined to be exactly 24 hours apart, this is called "civil time." (In some places it is still sometimes called "civil time" – e.g. France is still partly in the Winter Time Zone)
Because solar time is defined to be exactly 24 celestial hours apart, this is called "uncivil time." (In some places it is now commonly called "astronomical time.") The two have roughly identical numbers of hours and minutes of daylight and darkness, although civil time lags behind solar time by 9 hours and 2 minutes on average.
The difference between civil and uncivil time has been known for a very long time; the Greeks knew about it, for instance, because it was used to time tolling bridges. Duke James of Stonington of Scotland (1382–1455) invented a tolling bridge in 1360, so if you live in a place with a stony stair, you can connect the trivia to the trivia. The bridge still remains; the books say he built it in memory of his brother James on the Stone Stair, who was also James III of Scotland, Duke of Orkney and grandson of James V of Scotland, whose victory at the Battle of the Boyne (1746) was the first successful defence of the Scottish crown since 1146.

I did not put together a post for War of 1812 Wednesday in a timely manner, but while it's still Wednesday and the 14th of December in my timezone: it's the 208th anniversary of the Battle of Lake Borgne! A British victory for the Royal Navy in Louisiana, although the subsequent Battle of New Orleans didn't go so well on land.
Tumblr media
British and American Gunboats in Action on Lake Borgne, 14 December 1814, Thomas L. Hornbrook (Wikimedia Commons).
Sir Alexander Cochrane (uncle of Lord Thomas Cochrane) was in charge of the British fleet, but mostly I remember the Battle of Lake Borgne for a lieutenant of HMS Bedford who was wounded in the action: John Franklin.
Tumblr media
A lot of War of 1812 connections for the 1845 Franklin Expedition: Franklin himself, a veteran, and HMS Terror (which bombed Stonington, Connecticut amongst other places during the conflict).
The other officers and crew of the Franklin Expedition were much too young for the War of 1812, but if you look into their service records you can find a few degrees of separation. Henry TD Le Vesconte served on HMS Endymion (1797) as a midshipman—the same ship that defeated USS President in the War of 1812. Graham Gore was on HMS Albion, once Sir George Cockburn's flagship in the Chesapeake Campaign of the War of 1812.

Vivien Kellems Takes On the IRS
Vivien Kellems fought for numerous causes during her lifetime. While she believed in equality for women (in the workplace and in the home), and she proved an avid supporter of a woman’s right to vote, perhaps no fight garnered as much attention from the entire nation as Kellems’s highly publicized battles with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
The only daughter of seven children born to ministers in Des Moines, Iowa, Vivien Kellems attended the University of Oregon where she earned a bachelor’s degree in 1918 and a master’s in economics two years later. She then pursued her PhD at Columbia University, but dropped out, becoming a theatrical publicist.
In the late 1920s, Kellems’s brother, Edgar, invented an improved cable grip for use in stringing electrical wiring. Partnering with her brother, Kellems founded Kellems Cable Grips Inc. in Manhattan. The company eventually sold their product for use on such projects as the New York subway system, the Chrysler Building, and the George Washington Bridge.
In 1942 Kellems relocated the company to Westport, Connecticut. It was the same year Vivien Kellems first sought public office, losing a congressional race to Claire Boothe Luce (the first woman from Connecticut elected to the US House of Representatives). For Kellems, it was the first of several political defeats, including failed US Senate campaigns in 1950, 1956, and 1962, and a failed gubernatorial campaign in 1954.
Vivien Kellems, 1940 – Smithsonian Institution Archives
A year after moving to Westport, Kellems opposed the country’s use of a graduated income tax and publicly announced her decision to abstain from paying federal income taxes. After having her patriotism called into question for withdrawing financial support for her country during time of war, she backed down, but only temporarily.
Renewed Battles With the IRS
In 1948, Kellems escalated her fight for tax reform by announcing her plan to cease withholding federal income taxes from her employees’ paychecks. She argued that the Internal Revenue Service did not make her an employee or reimburse her for the time she spent collecting employee taxes so she felt no obligation to do the IRS’s work for them. Kellems’s protest was national news and earned her an interview on one of the earliest episodes of the popular television show, Meet the Press. It was in this same year that Kellems moved her business up the Connecticut shoreline to Stonington—after the town of Westport notified her of her business’s location in an area zoned strictly for residential purposes. Fourteen years later, Kellems closed her company, proclaiming it an end to the era of small business in America.
In 1965 she made another senatorial bid. Running as an independent, she protested the voting system that called for casting ballots along party lines rather than allowing voters to choose individual candidates. Her protest consisted of sitting in a voting booth for nine hours until she eventually fainted from exhaustion.
In the years that followed, Kellems continued to battle the IRS. Protesting that tax laws unfairly penalized unmarried individuals, Kellems never filled out another tax return. She, instead, signed blank returns every year and sent them to the IRS. She continued her fight for tax law reform right up until her death in 1975.

Rob Simmons reflects on his relationship with McCain
STONINGTON -- It was 1979 when now-First Selectman Rob Simmons was told by his boss, the late Rhode Island Sen. John Chaffee, to set up a trip for him to a half-dozen Middle Eastern countries.
That meant Simmons, an Army veteran of the Vietnam War, had to make his way over to a basement office of the Navy's liaison officer to the Senate, a Capt. John McCain.
When Simmons entered, an enlisted woman told him he had to talk to a Marine Corps major who then said he had to talk to McCain.
"I began to feel like I was getting the runaround," Simmons recalled on Sunday.
When he pushed open the door to McCain's office, Simmons said he was overwhelmed by the cigar smoke.
All he could see were two feet up on the desk and someone hidden behind the newspaper he was reading.
Simmons first coughed to get McCain's attention. When there was no reaction, he coughed again. Then he spoke up.
The two feet stayed on the desk, but the newspaper slowly lowered.
McCain looked at Simmons for a few moments and then took the cigar out of his mouth.
"Who the hell are you?" he asked Simmons.
It wouldn't be the last time the two military officers would meet, as Simmons said they worked on veterans and other issues together when Simmons served three terms as U.S. representative from the 2nd District from 2001 to 2007. McCain died Saturday after battling brain cancer.
Soon after Simmons went to work as staff director for the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and its chairman, Arizona Sen. Barry Goldwater, McCain announced he was running for congressman from Arizona.
Opponents pointed out he had lived in the state for less then two years, but McCain countered by saying the longest he had lived anywhere was the Hanoi Hilton, a reference to the six years he was held captive and tortured by the North Vietnamese after being shot down during a bombing mission.
First as a son of Navy officer and then as a Navy aviator, he frequently moved around the country. As a small child, McCain lived on Ocean Avenue in New London and attended Harbor School.
"He was just a natural politician, a people person," said Simmons, who worked with McCain's staff while he was with Goldwater.
"I don't claim to be a close friend of his. But he did some things over the course of our careers that were helpful to me," Simmons said.
One of them came in 2000 when Simmons was in a close contest with incumbent Democratic U.S. Rep. Sam Gejdenson. The national Republican Campaign Committee organized a group of Republican senators and congressman who were flying around the country to support GOP candidates and would be stopping at Groton-New London Airport to speak on behalf of Simmons.
Just before their arrival, two of Gejdenson's staffers leaked comments Simmons had made in the past about never torturing Viet Cong prisoners but using subtle pressure of persuasion when he worked with the CIA in Vietnam and southeast Asia during the war. Two college students then accused Simmons of being a war criminal.
"It was a blow to my campaign," Simmons said. "I had closed the gap from 25 percent to within the margin of error."
Simmons said that when the plane landed just a few days before the election at Groton-New London Airport, the door opened and just one Republican member of Congress walked out -- McCain.
All the others had abandoned Simmons in light of the last-minute allegations.
Simmons said a fiery McCain then strode over to the reporters and cameras to speak.
According to a report in The Day, McCain said he was proud to stand with Simmons at the rally, which attracted 600 of Simmons' supporters.
"He is good and decent American and he serves our support," McCain said of Simmons.
"'When is America going to come to grips with the fact that the war is over? Good people served in Vietnam. When the war was over, Rob Simmons and a whole generation of people should have been treated with the respect they deserved,'" Simmons recalled McCain saying on Sunday. "That's just the way he was."
A photo of confetti raining down on Simmons and McCain hangs in both Simmons' Town Hall office and in his home, the latter signed by McCain.
Simmons said that during his six years in Congress, he and McCain worked a lot on veterans' issues, and McCain, who headed the Senate version of the U.S.-Vietnam caucus, inspired Simmons to start the House version. They then worked on improving relations with Vietnam and bringing the country into the World Trade Organization.
A short time later, McCain came to Simmons' aid again after Simmons had convinced the House to designate New London as the site of the proposed national Coast Guard Museum. But New York Sens. Hillary Clinton and Charles Schumer had passed a Senate version of the bill that designated New York, which was promising more funding, as the host location.
The House and Senate then jointly heard testimony from Simmons, Clinton, Schumer and others. McCain presided.
After the hearing, Simmons said he went to McCain's office to press his case for New London.
McCain reminded Simmons that he had lived in New London and attended school there as a child. More important, he felt the museum should be where the Coast Guard Academy is located. Simmons said McCain's influence was enough to sway members to support New London. Fundraising and planning for the $100 million museum continues with construction slated to begin in 2021.
"When I think of John, I think of a guy who was outspoken. Like most vets he was frustrated by their experience in the war, its political ramifications and how veterans were treated after the war," Simmons said. "But he turned that sense of anger into public life and tried to make the country better."
Simmons said he was honoring McCain by lowering the American flag in his yard to half-staff.
"It's sad day for me," he said.
